Mbuba,
The good? Job security. Also the bond you will make with your co-workers is nothing short of the bond you have with brothers and sisters in the military if you have served.
Please don’t get me wrong Mbuba, some people make fantastic careers in corrections. But for the most part, corrections will eat a person alive and can have lasting affects on their personalities. I don’t think it’s fair to candy coat or glamorize the great things you can do in corrections like saving all the lost souls and converting the evil to saints (insert sarcasm)…. the truth of the matter is alot of your training will be; how to avoid getting stabbed, performing a proper inmate investigation, signs of impending aggression, how to CYA because at one point in your career it will come down to an inmate’s word against yours. One might think your word is golden, but I have seen officers dismissed because like I said, inmates have 24/7 to refine their skills and trade. That “trade” is making your life difficult.
Keep in mind the people in your charge are there because they are the worst society has to offer. Day in and day out you deal with those people. Regardless of how strong you may believe your convictions are, you will take home bits and pieces of your job to your wife, kids and friends. Eventually your friends will abandon you and only your co-workers will be left, then when you get together you generally talk about work the entire time. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to talk you out of it, I’m simply telling you what’s on the small print on the back of the brochure.
George, you have given me useful insight into what life is as a correction officer.I am determined to offer my best service as a correction officer.I will see corrections as a way of life and not just ‘a job’.Thanks for the info
Wow SGM …..what was your MOS?? You sound a little ‘’over qualified’’ to be a C/O……impressive resume!!!!
Hey Sgt. Contact the guys at Riot Ready. They have some really good trainers that are all CERT all the time. High Speed Low Drag. They have a lot of great information.
I work in Virginia at a local jail. We do allow visits, but the inmate must pay for the trip. He has to pay the hourly rate for 2 officers and mileage. It has to paid in advance.
hello,
i’m looking for any info or powerpoint presentations in ref to cultural diversity. this will be used for a yearly in service training class of new and veteran correction officers.
any info provided is greatly appreciated. please email
I think you might be making an assumption about travelling on the public’s dime – it’s not done. Ontario does not have the financial resources to build new prisons for Harper, let alone fly inmates all over the country. Considering the over-work that most public employees face, perhaps you are just a bit peeved that your nephew had to work on a Saturday. If you are positive that the flight was at the taxpayers’ expense, perhaps you might like to send the details to the Toronto Star for one of their front page, investigative reports.
One thing I’d like to clarify on my post is that we only allow offenders to attend funerals within the state of Oklahoma. They don’t fly anywhere – they are driven in a state van. If it is out of state, it is not allowed.
As a woman of God,I am going to choose my words carefully.Though men, women and children commit crimes, this does not make them without family.I do not agree that they should be able to attend just any family funeral.I strongly believe that immediate family members that pass away should be the exception. Why do I say this? Why do I feel this way?I have family(close in relation)in the prison system.People only have one mother, one father, one set of brothers and sisters, and grandparents, and there is also spouses………Going to prison doesn’t mean that they not only will serve the sentence for their offense, but they should be punished even more buy being denied the right to say good-bye to someone for the very last time.Being in prison is hard enough. Not just on the prisoners, but the families also. Why does this bother you so very much? If,God forbid, you broke the law, went to prison and your mother, father, sister, brother, wife, son, daughter, grandchild died.Would you feel the same way you feel now???
I work in corrections in Texas and would can provide information. I realize this post is a bit old and may be out of date but let me know if you would like information.
Let me suggest you contact the Anti-defamation League (ADL) and they will help you tailor a program specific to your area – which can be modified as populations change. You can find a contact for them (and a explanation of their diversity training) at: http://www.adl.org/education/edu_awod/awod_diversity_training.asp.
Better yet, since the criminal justice system is heavily weighted against minorities why not contact a minority speaker who has more insight and information? Try runokorashidi@yahoo.com and see if he can whip up a down to earth program for you that inmates and officers alike can understand. He travels the world visiting universities from Cairo to Kokomo giving lectures on African and minority history, so this diversity education would be a breeze for him.
I read this book “Games Criminals Play” as commented below. That book is awsome!! And it has helped me immensely on the job day to day!!! We should be versed on their games, and the way they test officers. I have been able to pick up on things before they happen, thanks to this book!!
I am looking for any policies relating to below,
Any policy on Video Survailence from request to who can view.
Any policy on issuance of cell phone to transporation staff.
Please email me at mrivera@hcnj.us
Respectfully
Lt M Rivera
Good Afternoon,
May I suggest you visit the library of the National Institute of Correction’s website: www.nicic.org? The library contains many lesson plans on this topic for this specific audience. I suggest that you first offer some cultural “awareness” training before doing anything else? Your participants need to know how they feel and/or react to differences in a culturally diverse environment. Good Luck.

Corrections was a good career for me. I recently retired. I spent 26 years and 2 months at a Maximum Security Prison in Ohio. Involve yourself in all the training you can Include self training, ie; read books watch videos. Become part of special teams, SRT, STG, Honor Guard. But, also, find a good hobby, pursue it. Do not ever forget your beginnings. I retired a Supervisor and I feel confident that the Officers who worked for me would say, I remember where I came from.
I recently retired from a Maximum Security Prison in Ohio. I retired as a Lieutenant. Just wanted to meet and greet with some true professionals and share some stories.
Question is in the title.
I’ve also taught in-service academy and pre-service classes about cutural diverisity for our Office. You are welcome to text me at 801-231-1527 and we’ll talk.
Thanks, Sam.
With all the ptsd in the media today concerning the vets coming back from overseas, I am hoping there will be more coverage with ptsd and law enforcement ( corrections, police etc.) and more help available for these heros as well. Not only are they affected, the whole family is also affected. Where do we get help and education ? It seems there are not alot of specialists in this area and unless you are a vet,we as family members cannot find where to go to get this help. Being a wife of a retired corrections officer with ptsd, I find it difficult to understand and cope at times with what he goes through. It is a hidden disability unlike an obvious physical injury, and the unaffected population do not understand. But family members are affected and I for one want to help to understand, but where do we go?
The best way to deal with their games is to think like they do. When I completed cell shakedowns, I always got inside their minds. The most off the wall places to hide stuff is right in front of your face. Inmates will always play to your feelings. They pick up on what you like and dislike. It is the same in the real world. Con artists always find out more about you then you know about yourself. When they blow up your ego, you are more inclined to give them trust.
I recently retired from Corrections. I was involved in a Riot, numerous hostage situations and an unknown amount of assaults. I was working the day a teacher was murdered and I saw her being taken out on a gurney. I was working the day an Officer, who was a hostage during the riot was murdered. I too, suffer from PTSD. I retired with 30 years in and I feel so different now. I did go to counseling through EAP in Ohio while I was still working. You are correct, know one knows what the employee or his/her family go through. We walked the silent beat. Society would rather not know what goes on inside our heads or what our families have to endure. Please understand, sometimes we don’t want to talk about it. I started lifting weights again and it really helps. I hunt a lot and that helps too. I guess finding a hobby with no relation at all to my work is what helped the most.
The bottom line is come to work. I, as a supervisor at a Maximum Security prison in Ohio, dealt with this daily. FMLA is the reason most prisons have to mandate overtime. People do not want to come to work. That causes people who have already worked 8 hours, to be froze for another 8 hours. This causes undo stress. Officers need to weed out the ones who call off due to being LAZY. When they do come to work and their fellow Officers no longer want to be their buddy, it doesn’t take long for the message to come across. There are times when there is no way out of mandated overtime but those times are few and far between.
Fox has a MK-9 delivery system called a cell buster. It penetrates material so as to deliver the chemical into the cell. If I am not mistaken it is manufactured by fox.
